Johnstone Makhubu is a senior tax and public-sector executive serving as Deputy Commissioner responsible for Taxpayer Engagement and Operations at the South African Revenue Service (SARS). In this capacity he oversees operational performance across tax and customs functions and leads specialised compliance and audit programmes.
Previously he served as SARS Chief Officer: Finance (appointed August 2018) and has held senior leadership roles in the private sector, including positions at Eskom, Anglo American and Unilever.

A qualified engineer and business leader, he combines technical and strategic skills—backed by an MBL and a PhD in Leadership—with hands-on experience across government and major private-sector organisations to deliver efficient, transparent and accountable revenue and operational systems. He’s happily married to a truly amazing South African woman, and they have some wonderful kids together!
